Photo of the Day

I did a batch of post-processing work yesterday, including on the picture below. So far, it’s gotten markedly lower reviews on photo.net than its sister image of benches on Pyramid Lake. This is slightly mysterious to me, because the images feel similar to me, but I’m getting the idea that I’m seeing this image differently than other people. Take a look at the image and feel free to leave feedback on photo.net about why you do or don’t like it.

  1. Hey Mark, dug up your blog after I started using a blog aggregation service. Painless way to read blogs that post infrequently! I am, however, too lazy to sign up on photos.net to leave a comment there. :(

Anyhoo, I’m in line with the other feedback you have been getting. The “sister image” does things right beause the chairs are the obvious subject. They naturally lead your eyes out into the water, which has an interesting ice pattern. The parallel lines formed by the benches, the dock, and the ice are also interesting, and all lead off into the upper left corner. I found myself thinking “I want to sit down right there and experience this beauty!”

The simple “dock plus water” picture isn’t as interesting. The poles are not obvious subjects, and aren’t particularly interesting. The water is largely featureless, but is framed nicely by the dock. So the dock frames an uninteresting subject. The dock also appears chopped — the eye naturally walks along it to the top center of the picture, where it is left looking at not much. I found myself thinking “looks like that dock might lead to some nice benches.” :-)
