Has it come to this?
I was in Victrola Coffee this weekend, and by the cash, they had two signs taped up:
- Please do not talk on your cell phone while ordering
- Wireless access will be turned off during weekends to encourage other forms of communication
And then, I went snowboarding yesterday at Crystal Mountain, and saw a guy holding both his ski poles in one hand, because he was using his other hand to hold his cell phone, which he was yammering away on while skiing down the mountain.
Has it really come to this? Are we so permanently distracted by our communication technology that we can’t properly engage in the act of ordering coffee from the human being behind the café counter, or even skiing?
Here’s a suggestion for 2006 (and one I intend to try to follow): try living in the moment a little more. It’s OK to turn off your cell phone while skiing. Say something nice to the person serving you coffee. Instead of sitting in the café all day, get up and go for a walk. Enjoy the moment.
